People often draw comparisons between daily life and boxing. In fact, many of our daily life idioms come directly from boxing; duke it out, heavy hitter, on the ropes, saved by the bell, low blow, in your corner etc. The comparisons are valid, and they ring especially true for this UNDRCARD instructor, spin instructor and entrepreneur. Mandy Balak, awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year in 2014 by Startup Canada and recognized as one of Alberta’s Top Young Innovators in 2016 explains that “as an entrepreneur you get beat down every day. The saying it's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up is really relatable to being in business.” explains Mandy.

How did this ambitious business woman get involved in boxing? Few people know that Mandy began martial arts at 3 years old and eventually transitioned to boxing all the way through her high school years. “My mom chose martial arts over ballet for me as a kid; and I’m glad she did. I moved on to boxing shortly after and that’s always been about discipline and commitment, both mental and physical. I’ve applied these skills to my personal and professional life. We each fight daily battles and, for me, putting gloves on and connecting with a heavy bag feels immensely powerful and liberating. I’ll impel you to find a deeper strength in my classes, a strength you didn’t know you had, so that you can walk out, loud and proud, from the UNDRCARD boxing studio and into your daily life”.

All this heavy talk about heavy bags and one could forget that Mandy has her pulse on every fun event happening in town. “I am the founder and CEO of It’s Date Night which features restaurants, events, entertainment and fun things to do in Calgary making it easy to plan a great date.” Looks like there's one more fun date to put in the ‘ol Date Night calendar.
